Cann confident as side chase domestic double

Sing when you're winning:St. David's' victorious players celebrate last year's Eastern Counties final victory. This weekend they will be gunning to retain their Counties title and lift the Premier Division trophy.

Two games, two trophies, two chances at glory, or failure. St David's go into this weekend on the brink of winning their first league title since 2001, and there is also the small matter of defending their Eastern Counties crown to contend with as well.

The next 72 hours are going to be an important time in the Islanders' history. They face Counties challengers Bailey's Bay tomorrow, and then take on Police at home the following day. And while some teams might crack under the pressure, Lionel Cann has no such worries about his side.

Cann has every right to feel confident. This is a team carrying ten internationals, and in Angelo Cannonier has an opening bowler that can't be far from making it a full 11, and they are desperate to claim their first league title in eight seasons.

"I think the boys played enough, have played enough international cricket. They have enough experience of tough situations," said Cann.

"Obviously it is always hard to play the day after a County game, especially if we retain or win the cup on Saturday. Guys are going to look to celebrate, but our main focus this year is to win the league title.

"We have a group of young guys, some of them have never won the league before, due to travel with the national programme over the last five years, so the team has always been depleted, so this is the first year that the team has been at full strength, so their main focus is to win the league.

"Hopefully they'll maintain that focus over the next few days, have thought about it this last week, and have got themselves ready for two big games."

Cann is under no illusions as to the size of the task his team is facing, something made all the more difficult by the fact that everyone wants to beat St David's.

"Everybody knows that St David's are the team to beat. We are the future of cricket in Bermuda, and everyone wants to beat us. That's the ultimate. To beat St David's," said Cann.

"So we have to be up for it and, hopefully, on the day the boys are ready for the challenge."

First up are Bailey's Bay, challenging a St. David's side that hasn't lost a game in the Eastern Counties since 2005. The challengers have drafted in a host of guest players including veteran batsman Charlie Marshall, an approach that Cann takes as a compliment.

"You always want to be playing against the best, and Bailey's Bay have obviously picked the best that are available to them, and that makes it even sweeter if we can win," he said.

"It's definitely a compliment to us, they're bringing in four or five guest players and they have gone for the older players, and the more experienced players so this weekend will be even tougher.

"County is always tough, no matter what team they pick, but they've got experience, guys who have been there and won it before, so it's going to be very, very tough to hold on.

"It's always easier to win it, than to retain it with the new system that we have."

After Bay come Police, a game St David's are expected to win comfortably, and for Cann another opportunity to show off an array of shots that make him one of the most devastating batman on the Island.

He tore Bay to pieces last week, blasting 58 runs from just 17 balls.

"I'm in really good form, I haven't played in that many games this year, but the games I have played in I've scored loads, and loads of runs, so it's just a matter of using my experience," said Cann.

"I always feel confident going into any sort of game, I'll get a good training session, a good hit in the nets behind me and move on from there and hopefully continue my good form."
