Carty runs PB but still misses out

Bermuda's 800 metres runner Henry Stevens-Carty ran a personal best time at the IAAF World Youth Championships but it wasn't enough to qualify for the finals in Italy.

Stevens-Carty, one of six local athletes competing in Sudtriol this week, finished with a time of 1:53.13 in yesterday's semi-final race. The US college student had also set a personal best in his heat, coming third with a time of 1:54.41.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson said: "Henry was very pleased with his race and Gina Evans, the team manager, said that he ran a very smart race but of course when you race with Kenyan athletes you are at a whole different level."

The Islands hopes of glory now rest upon the shoulders 200m runners Kyle Virgil and Shawnae Brangman who compete today.

Earlier this week Shaquille Dill placed sixth in the 800m with a time of 1:59.08, while Virgil and Brangman both failed to advance to the next round of the 100m.

Ryan Furbert finished fouth in the 400m but his time of 49.82 was not good enough to progress, while Allison Outerbridge failed to advance in the Triple Jump.

The IAAF Championships are involve nearly 2000 athletes from around the world with 173 of their 213 member federations represented.
