Clean sweep puts Contest back on course

The lead in the Coronation Cup points standings swapped hands for the third time this season as Contest III leapfrogged previous leaders Challenger II after a dominant display of fitted dinghy racing in Granaway Deep over the weekend.

Contest III reeled off three consecutive bullets to get the defence of their Coronation Cup crown back on track.

Fitted with her number two rig, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club boat overtook leader Victory IV heading to the second windward mark and never looked back to get the day off to a winning start.

Second place went to Elizabeth II followed by Jordy Walker's Bloodhound in third. Challenger II and Victory IV both sank on the four and three race course.

Now sporting her number three rig, Contest III got off to a slow start in the second race but eventually passed leader Challenger II on the third leg to go on and take line honours by another comfortable margin. Challenger II finished second and Victory IV third while Bloodhound and Elizabeth both sank as the challenging conditions continued to take their toll.

The third race saw Contest III complete a clean sweep of top honours after passing Bloodhound and Challenger II on the inside going around the first windward mark and covering the remainder of the three and two race course unopposed.

Second place went to Challenger II followed by Victory IV in third while Elizabeth and Bloodhound both sank.

Reflecting upon the day's performances, Contest III skipper Somers Kempe, commented: "The crew work was really good and we worked very hard keeping the boat flat.

"The boat sailed well and was well balanced. We picked a couple of good shifts here and there to keep the boat sailing fast and things just worked out."

n Laser Radial sailor Cameron Pimental finished 28th in a record fleet of 55 entries at last week's Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Buzios, Brazil.

The 2008 Youth Sailor of the Year Award recipient's best finish arrived in the penultimate race of the eight-race series when he placed 13th.

Accompanying Pimental in Brazil was Argentine coach Dino Weber who was impressed by the Bermudian's overall showing.

"We always want more but the result was excellent given the number of competing countries – the highest ever," he commented. "To have the opportunity to sail against an international fleet of this calibre is very valuable and I believe Cameron benefited greatly from the experience."
