College coaches impressed by U-19s
Senior education officer Darrin Lewis has had his phone ringing constantly from overseas college coaches since a Bermuda Under-19 select team returned to the Island from the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL).
A number of Bermuda's players received rave reviews after the tournament held in Raleigh, North Carolina, last week, and could now win scholarships at NCCA colleges from division's one, two and three.
Lewis, who travelled with the team, said eight college coaches had expressed an interest in Bermuda players since they arrived back on the Island earlier this week.
"Since we've been back I've been contacted from about eight coaches interested in some of the players," said Lewis.
"I've also sent out some invites to the Christmas tournament against Trinidad Under-23s and the Clyde Best tournament in February.
"On and off the field, the players demeanour was superb. It was an excellent opportunity for the guys to play against better opposition and after adjusting to the weather, they played extremely well.
"In our first match we played in chilly conditions and in the second game the pitch was not a good playing surface and we went down early, but still managed to get a result out it."
Lewis said the likes of Dante Leverock, Troy Tucker, Jaylon Bather, Anthony Hunter and Daniel Andrade impressed during the tournament, while many other under-age players also caught the eye of college coaches.
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) in conjunction with the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation (BSSF) entered the team who played under the BSSF name, which confused some of the scouts, Lewis said.
"They didn't realise we were playing because our name wasn't Bermuda but BSSF. We didn't play kick and run ball but followed the plans laid out by coach Scott Morton, and once we got used to the physicality of the game we were okay," he said.
Bermuda's appearance in the competition marked the first time an international side had competed in CASL, which is a recruitment ground for over 400 universities and colleges.
They romped to a 3-1 win over Andromedia 92 Reds in their final match with goals from Terryn Fray and two penalties from skipper Troy Tucker.
Bermuda drew 3-3 against Gainesville Caimans with Casey Castle, Fray and Anthony Hunter all on target for Morton's side.
In their opening game, Bermuda were held to a 0-0 draw by Harpeth Hurricanes FC.
BFA national academy head coach Morton, assistant coach Richard North, and BSSF administrator Manny Faria, along with Lewis accompanied the team on the trip.
