Cougars repel Rams' late charge
Lady Cougars midfielder Jessica Furtado hailed her side's resolve after they held off North Village Lady Rams 2-1 to win the BFA Cup at the National Sports Centre yesterday.
Tamisha Darrell put Cougars up 1-0 midway through the first half before substitute Kyla Ramatar doubled the lead in the 68th to make it a seemingly straightforward win.
But it wasn't to be as Shuntae Todd pulled a goal back for Rams three minutes later, leaving Cougars to hang on.
Furtado, who created the second goal and also had a chance to put her name on the scoresheet, acknowledged the determination of Rams and her team's resistance.
"It was a good game, we both had chances to score and at the end it was us who came out on top," she said. "It took a while to get going due to the playing surface and the weather but once we came to grips with it, the match came to life.
"Overall, we did what our coach asked us to do and it feels great right now.
"When they scored to make it 2-1, we saw that they had some life left in them and wanted it pretty bad, but we just stayed focused at the back and in the end that was the difference.
"We played a smart game having the lead . . . our defence did what was asked of them and we got the goals at a crucial stage of the match so it is pleasing.
"It feels good being the team to beat, although it has been this way for some time now.
"So we will go away, celebrate this win and refocus on what lies ahead."
