Cuts new boys will have to prove their worth, says coach

Willow Cuts coach Rodney Fubler has declared that no man is bigger than the team as his men prepare for life in the Premier Division, with the side having been the busiest of all sides in the top flight in the off-season transfer market.

The Somerset club have added the talents of Malachi Jones, George O'Brien jr., and Chris Douglas, yet Fubler insisted that no man is guaranteed a spot on the team with each player having to prove his worth.

With the new season just around the corner, the Cuts supremo stated that there weren't any specific goals for the side apart from putting their best into the performances.

"We are preparing for this season how we have prepared for any other season," said Fubler. "We have some new players and we look good, but it's not about what is on paper but rather what is shown on the pitch.

"Our players know they can't walk into the team, they have to earn their spot so they will have their time and see how they advance.

"We aren't coming into the season looking for any titles or title contention, we are looking to play good cricket and see what happens.

"We have the talent to get the job done, we need to apply that on the pitch.

"Western Counties isn't our aim as it has gone back so far and the three players we have picked up won't be able to play anyway so it's not our concern.

"There will be a few chances and when they come hopefully the younger ones can show what they are made of."

While the high profile names have come into the fray at the club, Fubler's main concern is the youth who are on the fringe of getting into the first team.

Gone are the two-day fixtures from the Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) schedule for 2010, a format that Cuts were using to groom their youngsters. Now nothing has been implemented to take its place.

For Fubler, it will be a case of selecting a side that will be able to compete while giving the players that got the side to the top flight a chance to showcase their skills, with the majority of them not having played at the highest level before.

"The players we have picked up are all good players but how the format has been changed this year it will be hard to get the younger guys in the team, so they will have to wait for injuries.

"My main concern this year is the ones that brought us up getting a chance to play.

"As long as they stay focused and keep themselves in good shape between now and the beginning of the season then they will get their chance.

"A lot of them haven't played Premier Division cricket so my job is to get them ready for it.

"Our focus is to continue to work hard, stay focused and you will get your turn.

"They took away the two-day so we can't groom youngsters and that was our focus on that."
