Doe's dinghy claims new record
Huckleberry, a Bermuda dinghy that sailed from Bermuda to Newport, Rhode Island and back in the span of six days, could have set a new world record.
Owner and operator of the dinghy, Bobby Doe, claims he covered an astounding 1,270 miles during the journey, and says he's confident his feat will be recognised as a record.
Doe left Bermuda on June 14 and arrived in Newport on June 17, where he rested for a few days before making the return trip to Bermuda, starting on June 20 and landed back inthe Island on the June 23.
The boat was on display yesterday on the forecourt of PW Marine on Serpentine Road.
"The boat is a Bermuda dinghy which can be motored, sailed and rowed equally well," said Doe.
"The record is for distance, size of the engine, single-handed, unescorted Bermuda dinghy.
"There was no record holder before me so I am the setter.
"I had extreme confidence in the hull as it was ocean tested beforehand, and it exceeded everything I have done as far as designing.
"Going from Bermuda to Newport took three days and six hours, while coming back took two days, 20 hours.
"On the journey to Newport up we ran into some bad weather, winds upwards of 15 to 20 knots.
"In the end, I am pleased with what has transpired from the adventure."
