Dramatic equaliser puts Zebras on top
PHC Zebras 2
Somerset Trojans 2
PHC and long-time rivals Somerset Trojans had to settle for a share of the spoils in a dramatic draw at Southampton Oval yesterday.
An Adrian Burrows double for Trojans was cancelled out by a Chris Furbert penalty and a Jahni Raynor strike late on to level matters.
Goals, disallowed goals, missed chances and a late fracas made sure both sets of supporters were thoroughly entertained during a pulsating match that pitted second and third place against each other.
Adrian Burrows rose above his defender to plant home a delicious Tahj Wade cross in the third minute to send the visitors ahead.
Burrows should have increased his team's advantage, but Dwight Basden took too long to make up his mind in a two-on-one situation with his strike partner open at the far post.
In the end he chose to square the ball and Glasford in the PHC goal collected his pass comfortably.
Jevon Sealy almost opened the host's account in the 37th minute, but his effort was scrambled out of the area and cleared for a throw in.
Basden, who was skippering in the absence of Jelani Scott, then robbed Glasford on the touchline and proceeded to put his effort to the back post only for the linesman to flag for the ball going out of bounds.
After the break, Kevin Lambe slipped in the Trojans area and made a hash of his goalscoring effort.
But before anyone could blink, it was Burrows who scored again in the 67th when he latched onto a through ball after the Zebras backline fell asleep and faked Glasford into diving before slotting into an empty net.
The turning point in the match came when Zakhi Iris bought Cecoy Robinson down with referee Ronue Cann making no hesitation, pointing to the spot.
PHC skipper Chris Furbert hammered his chance home to make it a match once more.
Player/coach Kyle Lightbourne had a chance to level matters but his diving header sailed high and wide from close range as the Zebras went searching for an equaliser.
It took until the 86th to level the scores as Raynor's near post strike enabled his side to draw level.
After some slack passing from Trojans Sealy strolled down the park to beat the Trojan's 'keeper Jjowmbe.
Injury-time winners were denied for both clubs as Raynell Lightbourne was deemed off-side after Robinson beat his man for pace at the touchline and cut a ball back, with a tussle breaking out between both teams who didn't see the linesman's flag up.
Burrows was sent off during the melee after seemingly trying to get the ball back for his side.
Andre Outerbridge was also denied a goal after he was deemed offside.
