Eagles' coach, players punished

Somerset Eagles coach Kenny Thompson

Somerset Eagles coach Kenny Thompson and a number of his players and staff have been slapped with a range of punishments for bringing the game into disrepute.

Thompson has been placed on a year's probation after being found guilty by Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) disciplinary committee of abusive behaviour towards a match official and failure to control his team.

In total the BFA handed out sanctions to three players, three team officials and one security guard following a spate of on and off-field incidents during Eagles' Premier Division game against Southampton Rangers at White Hill Field on November 2.

A controversial penalty appeal by Eagles' players was turned down by referee Alton Reid and that sparked last month's ugly scenes which saw assistant referee Cassandra Trott verbally abused and threatened by members of the Eagles bench.

Thompson told The Royal Gazette after the bad-tempered affair: "It was a horrible miscall . . . it was an obvious penalty and I don't how the referee and his assistant missed it. It's not about cheating or anything like that, it's about incompetence."

As tempers boiled over late in the game, Eagles striker Antwan Russell was sent off for a head butt that left Rangers defender Kemon Smith with a bloodied mouth.

Russell, who has been called up for Bermuda Under-23s matches against Trinidad later this month, has been handed an additional four-match suspension and placed on probation for a year.

Eagles assistant coach, Maurice Lowe, and manager, Jose Bather, were both found guilty of abusive language towards match officials. Lowe was placed on probation for six months, while Bather received a two-match suspension.

The disciplinary committee also put Steven (Dread) Burrows on probation for six months and handed him a two-match suspension for a number of offences including threatening the referee while gripping a crash helmet and bursting into the officials' changing room after the game in an abusive manner.

Jumaane Davis was also given a one year probation after being found guilty of foul and abusive language, and security guard Clifford Simmons was placed on six months probation for failure to escort the match officials to their dressing room after the game, among other offences.

Somerset Bridge Recreational Club were also fined $300 for failing to control their players and coaches. Johnny Bean had been charged with bringing the game into disrepute but after the committee spoke with assistant referee Antoine Augustus it was decided the defender had no case to answer.
