Family double for Naude and McMullen
Husband and wife Riaan Naude and Kim McMullen made it a family double yesterday taking overall individual honours in the male and female categories respectively in the season-ending Rubis Energy Bermuda Triathlon.
As expected both McMullen and Naude had a lot to do after the choppy 750 metre swim which favoured the stronger swimmers.
Naude trailed rival Peter Hallett by over two and a half minutes with McMullen a similar distance behind Vanessa Madeiros and 13-year-old Molly Pilgrim.
Both Naude and McMullen soon began to eat into the leaders' times over the four-lap 20km bike with McMullen flying on the bike and catching Pilgrim early on and then Madeiros going into the second lap.
Going into the bike to run transition Naude was right behind leader Jonathan Herring, who produced a strong ride to enter the transition just ahead of Hallett and 16-year-old Ryan Gunn.
Easily the fastest runners in the field, Naude and McMullen soon had the race sewn up as McMullen produced the fastest women's run time by over a minute to finish top female in one hour, 12 minutes and 11 seconds for eleventh overall.
Madeiros, who took the 30-39 age group honours, hung on well and added to her second place finish in the Bank of Bermuda Triathlon to finish second female in a solid time of 1.15.24 with the ever improving Kristyn Tobey, the 20-29 age group winner, rolling out another solid bike and run to take third in 1.16.55 ahead of Sue Edney, the 40-49 age group winner, and Molly Pilgrim, who was not on her best form and faded badly in the run to finish fifth but was still the first junior.
Carolyn Conway won the 50+ women's age group.
Naude paced himself well to catch the fading Herring and Hallett on the second lap of the run crossing the line in 1.04.18, a minute ahead of Hallett (1.15.15), who also won the 20-29 age group and the surprising Gunn (1.05.14), the 16-19 age group winner who both dropped fourth place Herring (1.06.29).
Norbert Meyer took overall honours in the men's 40-49 age group while Steve Petty, 57-years-old, finished an impressive 14th to win the 50+ age group. Mark Godfrey, 13-15 and Andrew Davis 30-39 were the other age group winners.
In the team event, Steve Petty, Mark Lombardi, who had the fastest bike on the day, and Mike Schindel were first across the line to win the men's division while Ryan Gunn, Neil de ste Croix and Claire de ste Croix were a close second and also the mixed team winners.
Karen Smith and Karen Bordage, fresh from their excellent Hawaii Ironman performances, teamed up with cyclist Nicole Mitchell to cross the line third and take female honours.
In the junior race Victoria Davis finished off an impressive season by crossing the line first in the 7-10 year olds and took the girls 9-10 title with eight-year-old Alex Pilgrim second overall and the 7-8 year old champion.
In a close finish Tim Viera, third overall, held off Tristan Narraway by three seconds to win the boys 9-10 age group with Felicia Viera taking the 7-8 girls title.
Annabella Doyle continued her good form and won the 13-14 year old girls category just seconds ahead of Charlie Pilgrim, the boys 11-12 winner, and Erica Hawley the girls 11-12 winner who had a strong race.
