Fraser's boot boosts Teachers

Teachers tightened their grip on the league with a hard fought win over Renegades over the weekend.

James Dockeray's try and a slew of Greg Fraser penalties were enough to see Teachers to a 19-8 win that put some breathing distance between themselves and Police.

After a scrappy first half, in which both sides traded penalties, Teachers began the second half stronger and moved six points ahead after two Fraser kicks.

Renegades hit back with a Tom Healy try and at 9-8 the game was evenly balanced. However, Fraser kicked another penalty to put his side further ahead and then Gades' Conor McGlynn was sin-binned for his persistent infringing and Teachers took full advantage.

Dockery scored after good work by Chris Naylor and Henry Paddison and as the game wore on Fraser's boot put more daylight between the two teams.

The first men's game of the day saw Police and Mariners clash in an encounter that doubled as the Paul Marsden Memorial match.

A typically bruising contest saw Mariners dominate the opening exchanges and a Steve Husbands try, coupled with Mark Pomeroy's accurate kicking saw them open up a 11-0 lead at the break.

The second half was all Police, however, and they scored 15 unanswered points, all from Tom Edwards to win an enthralling encounter 15-11.

In the ladies' games, Mariners beat Police 3-2, with Chantal Brown grabbing two tries for Mariners, while unbeaten Renegades all but sealed their third successive league title with a 2-0 win over Teachers.

This weekend will see the action take place on Saturday at Somersfield Academy.

Mariners' ladies take on Teachers at 11.30 a.m., with the men's game between the same clubs kicking off at 12.30 p.m. Police and Renegades face off in the other encounters, with the women's match at 2 p.m. and the men's at 3 p.m.
