Frustrated Perozzi wonders what might have been

Bermuda boxer Teresa Perozzi blamed her rib injury for her points defeat to Christina Hammer in Germany on Saturday night.

The 36-year-old was advised not to fight by her doctor after bruising her ribs during her final sparring session less than a week before facing Hammer for the vacant WBO belt.

Perozzi had considered pulling out of the fight and was given a pain-numbing injection to get her through the ten round bout at the Erdgas Arena in Riesa.

Following her 97-93 points win, German-native Hammer remains unbeaten after eight professional fights, leaving Perozzi frustrated at what might have been had she been fully fit.

"I was definitely not operating close to a 100 percent. My ribs and back muscles were a mess," said Perozzi. "I had the injection which got me through but I wasn't myself.

"I was not the person I was a week ago in training ... physically and emotionally (the injury) took its toll.

"I was advised by my doctor and physio not to fight but I couldn't back out if there was a way I could get through it. It's a real bummer to have trained so hard but these things happen."

Perozzi insists she was good value for a draw and now wants a rematch to set the record straight.

"We didn't get the decision which is no surprise. Many Germans came up to me and said they felt it was a draw and I think that would be a fair assessment," said Perozzi, who was due back on the Island today.

The last time Perozzi fought in Germany she endured a miserable night losing to Natascha Ragosina in the 'Seven at one Stroke' win – so named because seven belts were at stake.

Behind the scenes she was at loggerheads with her then promoter, while inside the ring her clarity of her vision was affected when her hair braids came loose.

If she gets her wish to fight 20-year-old glamour girl, Hammer, again, Perozzi hopes it will a case of third time lucky in Germany.

"(Hammer) was a perfect opponent for me," Perozzi said. "She had a very straightforward style and not a lot of power but my jab just was not effective enough with the injury on that side. I have asked for a rematch if they are looking for a title defence opponent as the crowd really enjoyed it. Maybe three-times will be a charm for me in Germany!"

Perozzi's professional record now stands at seven wins, four losses and one draw.
