Funky Flea skittles Forties with stunning figures of eight for 18

Curtis Lee: Eight for 18 off just 3.5 overs.

Slow bowler Curtis (Funky Flea) Lee achieved what might be a record bowling performance at Southampton Oval on Sunday when he guided Hamilton Parish to a six-wicket win over Forties in a low-scoring Commercial League Twenty20 clash.

Combining spin with subtle seam, the 45-year-old disc jockey kept the Forties batsmen guessing on the way to astonishing figures of eight for 18 off a mere 3.5 overs.

The former Somerset Cricket Club cricketer has always enjoyed good pickings at the Oval throughout his career but said he never dreamt one day he would soar to such heights.

"Southampton Oval has always been a good venue for me and I've always done well there," he said. "But this is by far my best performance and I still can't believe it."

Bowling on artificial matting, Lee was able to extract considerable movement in bowler-friendly conditions to keep a steady procession of batsmen handing back to the pavilion.

"It was like bowling on grass," he added. "I received a lot of movement off the surface and I was constantly tricking the batsmen - they didn't have a clue. I just spun them off the track."

Aiding Lee in Forties' (65 all out, 12.5 overs) swift demise were veteran seamers Corey Hill (one for ten) and Irving Burgess (one for 18).

Parish (66) lost four wickets in reply but reached their winning target with just under five overs to spare.

Hill said he thought Lee's performance might even be a world record in the shorter version of the game.

"I don't think anybody, anywhere in the world has achieved what Curtis did yesterday (Sunday)," the former Cup Match star said. "It was really incredible and you had to be there to believe it."

Earlier this month Pakistani left-arm orthodox slow bowler Sohail Tanvir took a record six for 14 off four overs in a Indian Premier League 20/20 contest involving Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Kiwi seamer Mark Gillespie currently holds the world record (four for seven) for the best bowling performance in an international 20/20 match.
