Gades claim first silverware

Renegades prop Tom Denton tackles a Teacher's player during the Sandy's Boat Club Tournament at Malabar last weekend.

Renegades won the first silverware of the new rugby season over the weekend when they swept the board at the Sandys Boat Club Tournament.

Both the men's and women's teams won their respective competitions, with the women winning the title for the third year in a row and the men beating defending champions Mariners in a close final.

Renegades' men began their tournament with a 10-3 win over Police, Greg Garside scoring the game's only try from an interception while Darragh O'Donoghue kicked a conversion and a penalty.

A Tom Edwards penalty was all that a weakened Police team could muster.

The defending champions, meanwhile, battled to a hard-fought win over Teachers, and after a scoreless first half, Warren Green's try cancelled out Greg Fraser's penalty to give them a 7-3 win.

Mariners made short work of Police in the next round, winning 8-0, while Renegades and Teachers battered each other to a 0-0 standstill.

The title decider came down to a straight fight between Renegades and Mariners, and in the end O'Donoghue's boot proved to be the difference between the two as the men in black won 8-5.

The two clubs also contested the women's final in which Renegades, who were unbeaten last season, eventually ground out a 3-0 win, with Laura Haynes scoring a hat-trick.

This weekend sees the start of the league, as Police and Mariners match up in the women's game at 12 p.m. and in the first men's game at 1 p.m. at Malabar on Saturday.

Teachers and Renegades face off at 2.30 p.m. in the ladies' and the men play each other for the Presidents Cup at 3.30 p.m.
