Gariepy leads record spree

Records continued to fall in the second meet of Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association's BEST series last weekend and it was 10-year-old Mitch Gariepy who led the way.

Gariepy set two new age-group records – the second in the 1,500 metres freestyle with a magnificent solo effort in the final event of the day.

The other came in the 100 metres individual medley has he broke the 25-year-old mark by Olympian Gerri Mewett.

The meet brought favourable comments from various coaches.

Ben Smith, Aquatics Manager/National Swimming Coach and head coach of Shark, said: "From a national standpoint this meet continued to show that we have some very talented swimmers in Bermuda and we can look forward to some great results locally and overseas in the coming months.

"I was very pleased with the performances of the Sharks swimmers.

"Out of the 59 swimmers who participated in the meet, 44 of them were able to achieve at least one personal best time from their three events and 13 were able to swim a personal best in all three of their events."

Richard Goodwin, National Swimming Coach/head coach of Harbour added: "Leading the way for our club once more was eight-year-old Emma Harvey, who, in her first attempt, broke the 200 metres individual medley record. She was joined by Ashley Irby who broke the eight and under age group record in the 200 metres backstroke also at her first attempt at competing in that event".

Barry Hanson, head coach of Dolphins said: "It's always difficult to name specific swimmers as most did well from a club perspective but certainly Emily Cowen, Josh Irvine and Tate Crofts warrant special mention for their outstanding swims."

The final meet of the series will be held on April 10 which will be the last opportunity to earn points and determine the eventual overall winners.
