Gifted young golfer makes his mark

Promising teenage golfer Ryan Roberts achieved a personal milestone when he placed 12th competing in a strong field at the US Kids World Championships of Golf held last month at the world famous Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

The current Phoenix Junior Match Play champion carded rounds of two-over-par 74 and even-par 72 to finish at 226 for the tournament, which involved 76 players from 14 different countries.

It was the young Bermudian's best finish to date in the tournament. "I did not putt well on the last day, the pin positions were very challenging, as were the greens in general.

"I've played in five US Kids World Championships before, but this is by far my best finish," Roberts said.

Roberts has excelled in the sport this year, taking divisional honours (12 to 14) at the Ross Blackie Talbot Junior Tournament at Tucker's Point and finishing 16th overall at the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play in June.

He also placed fourth at the Cobblestone Open in Acworth, Georgia, where he was accompanied by a group of fellow Bermudians last month.

Roberts has spent five consecutive weeks competing on both sides of the Atlantic where he continues to make steady progress.

The 14-year-old golfer is currently in attendance at the Sea Island Golf School with seven other local junior golfers and Belmont Hills pro Darron Swan. As Bermuda's national champion, Roberts will represent the Island in December at the prestigious Orange Bowl in Miami.
