Goater unimpressed despite Rams' Bean-inspired win
North Village 3
Devonshire Colts 0
North Village coach Shaun Goater took no satisfaction from his team's victory over rock bottom club Devonshire Colts, describing the Rams' performance as the "worst" of his brief tenure.
Village finally came alive after the break following a thoroughly insipid first half display with captain Ralph Bean capitalising on some poor Colts defending to fire home a second half hat-trick at Bernard Park yesterday.
In truth Bean could have helped himself to a double hat-trick with the Bermuda Hogges striker missing a number of chances before breaking the deadlock early in the second half.
Goater put Village's sluggish start to the game down to complacency and because of the youthful flavour of his starting line-up.
"This was the worst performance since I've been coach of Village," said Goater, who had made three substitutions by the start of the second half.
"We just didn't step up and that's not the level of performance I expect from my players. I handed a few 18-year-olds their debuts today as I wanted to give them a taste of things to come and maybe that contributed to our poor first half.
"I think we were also a bit complacent because we were playing Colts who are bottom of the league.
"If Colts had had a bit more quality then this game could have easily gone the other way."
After giving his under-performing players a stern half time team talk Goater said his players responded with a better showing: "The second half was better and the win keeps our momentum going," he said.
"Ralph (Bean) knows he probably should have scored even more goals today but he keeps getting in the positions and therefore got his reward.
"He scored a hat-trick despite having an indifferent performance."
Colts striker Andre Famous should have been done better with two first half chances with the visitors arguably edging the first period.
But Bean put the Rams ahead soon after the break with a close range header from substitute Pierre Smith's left wing cross.
Village doubled their advantage when Bean cut inside two defenders before flicking the ball past goalkeeper Greg Rose.
Shannon Burgess' poor back pass to Rose gifted Bean his hat-trick in the final few minutes with the Village man scrambling the ball into the net.
Due to a shortage of match officials available a member of the Village staff had to run the line as one of the referee's assistants.
