Golden girl Aitken sets new record
Kiera Aitken claimed gold in the 50 metre backstroke at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships (CISC) to qualify for the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.
Aitken set a new CISC record in the 18 and over category with a time of 29 seconds 61 in Cuba yesterday. In the same event Rebecca Sharpe came fourth with a finish of 32:22.
Yesterday, Lisa Blackburn continued to make a splash at the championships by adding a silver medal to the two golds she has already won.
She claimed a second place finish in the 18 and over 50m breastroke with a time 35 seconds 19.
Also among the medals for Bermuda on day three of the championships were Julian Fletcher won a bronze medal in the 18 and over 50m backstroke (30:92), and Emma Franklin grabbed a bronze medal in the girl's 13 and 14 200m backstroke in a time of 2:36.34.
In the 18 and over 4X100m medley relay team Sharpe, Blackburn, Aitken and Eleanor Gardner won silver, setting a new Bermuda Open record of 4:35.32 ¿ 17 seconds quicker than the previous best.
Finally, Roy-Allan Burch and Nick Thomson reached the finals in the 50m backstroke finishing 6th in a time of 29.07 and 7th in a time of 29.09, respectively.
Morgan Hopkins reached the girl's 15-17-year-old 50m breaststroke final but she was unfortunately the victim of a false start.
Bermuda have now won 11 medals at the championships, four gold, three silver and four bronze.
Today's final day of the Championships will see Emma Franklin (50m backstroke), Morgan Hopkins (15-17 girls), Rebecca Heylinger (15-17 girls), Roy-Allan Burch (18 and over boys) and Eleanor Gardner (18 and over girls) all take to the pool.
