Bermuda masters swimmer Colleen Nelson grabbed a gold medal at the FINA World Championships at Valhalla, Sweden at the weekend.

Nelson won the womens 100 metre breastroke in the 60-64 category with a time of one minute 37.25 seconds, just ahead of Germany's Annerose Trobish who finished in 1.37.43.

Remarkably, Nelson turned at the 50m mark in eighth place before chasing down her rivals to take victory.

The 61-year-old said she was shocked by her comeback: "I'm still in shock after winning this medal. I have not been as confident in my breaststroke this year, but have worked hard to change a few things in my stroke," said Nelson, who also finished sixth in the 100m freestyle.

"I knew that I had worked hard on my swimming for months, both in and out of the pool, and just had to swim the best race that I could".

Team-mate Karen Bruton was Bermuda's first swimmer in the water on Saturday's opening day, finishing 15th in 200m backstroke in the womens 40-44 category in a time of 3:05.26.

She went on to compete in the 100m breaststroke and finished in 30th position in field of 65 swimmers in 1:33.43.

Also in the pool at the weekend were Annette Budge, 42, who finished in 44th place in the 40-44 age group in 1.38.70 and Kim Thomas who swam the 100m breaststroke in the women's 25-29 age category in 1.34.19.

Paul Viney and Simon Horrell also both competed in the Valhalla pool in the 100m freestyle in the 55-59 age group with Viney finishing 19th (1.07.15) and Horrell in 22nd place (1.08.29).

In yesterday's 200m freestyle, Christiane Wehmeyer came 20th (2.33.72) and Budge finished 32nd (2.44.50), while Nelson placed ninth in the 50m butterfly (40.87). Horrell swam in the mens 200m butterfly, placing 23rd in 2.38.63, and came 19th in the 50m butterfly in 34.38 seconds.
