Good Evans! Rockal takes top honours in Laser class
Bermuda Olympic hopeful Rockal Evans knocked off traditional Bermuda winners Brett Wright and Malcolm Smith as the Laser fleet concluded its racing in International Race Week yesterday.
Evans, one of the Island's most promising young sailors, finished with 17 points, four less than his two Bermuda rivals.
Wright won a tiebreaker with Smith to finish second, both having collected 21 points.
Evans, the son of former Olympic sailor Howard Lee, is now expected to attend the Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) in Perth, Australia that will consist of a series of training programmes which will put a specific emphasis on fitness and technical skills.
Designed by the Perth 2011 Organising Committee, ENP aims to develop sailing nations as they attempt to qualify for the Olympics.
Besides making an impact in the Laser class, Evans also sails in Etchells and Fitted Dinghies.
The Laser fleet managed to finish all 11 of their scheduled races this week.
Meanwhile, after having won the IOD 'A' series earlier this week, Eugene (Penny) Simmons is heading for another victory in the 'B' series.
In yesterday's three races, he posted two firsts and a fourth to lead by a point over US sailor John Pulverman from Walpole, New Hampshire.
The local veteran leads in overall points for the Vrengen Gold Cup with 11 points over Peckham who has 17.
Not Mine skipper Allan Williams has shared the glory of his fourth consecutive J105 Class first place finish with co-skipper Glenn Astwood after high winds forced an early finish to that series.
The duo won on a tiebreaker that put Chuck Millican's Elusive into second place. Both boats finished with eight points.
After the sailors dropped a fourth place finish, Not Mine had scores of 1,1,2,1,3 and Elusive a record of 2,2,1,2,1.
Not Mine collected the victory with three wins over Elusive's two.
Third place in the five-boat class went to James MacDonald in Passion with 13 points.
Because of high winds early in the week, the J105s only sailed six of their nine scheduled races.
A close finish is shaping up in the Etchells class which has only one more race in the series, today .
Yesterday Tim Patton enjoyed a top flight performance, taking two bullets. He now has 12 points, one ahead of fellow Bermudian Martin Vezina.
Patton is the current keelboat Bermuda National Champion.
In the J24 class, Scott Snyder from Denver, Colorado continues to hold the lead he grabbed on the first day.
Going into yesterday's racing he had five first-place finishes and continued that form with a second, fourth and a third to take his points total to 10.
Peter Rich follows with 17 and Sean McDermott is in third with 22.
The final day of racing today will start at 11.00 a.m. on the Alpha course where the J24, Etchells and IOD classes wrap up their series.
A prize-giving will be held this evening at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.
