Hard work starting to pay off for Walker

Takehyi Walker

Takehyi Walker is braced for the next stage of his football evolution with the Boulevard skipper preparing for his international debut at Under-23 level.

Under the guidance of esteemed coaching guru Andrew Bascome, Walker has been transformed from a decent top-flight player to one of the Premier Division's standout performers.

The bustling striker enjoyed a fine season for the FA Cup winners and will look to carry his sparkling form into Bermuda Under-23s series of matches against USL-D2 opposition, starting with Harrisburg City Islanders on Saturday.

"It feels good being part of the new Under-23's set-up," said Walker, who will be used as an over-aged player.

"Being selected shows you have put in your work and someone has noticed your ability.

"I guess you could say this is a reward for my hard work last season and I want to continue learning in any way possible. I'm more dedicated to the game now and want to be a part of the set-up, not just for myself but also my country."

Walker has developed a newfound focus under Bascome who he credits for accelerating his progress and admits he would relish a Bermuda Hogges call-up in the future.

"Playing under Andrew this year has helped me come a long way with my game," Walker said.

"I'm more focused and determined to make the best of my skills and show my worth.

"He brought a sense of unity to the side and we really came together this season and I'm really appreciative of what I learned from him.

"I don't want to look to far ahead in terms of the senior national team as I'm focused on the here and now, and want to help the Under-23's reach our goals.

"Bermuda Hogges would also be an option for me at some point if they were interested in me – anything is possible in the long run."

Devonshire Cougars' Tumani Steede will miss Bermuda Under-23s match against Islanders having started pre-season training for his new club Reading Rage in the US.

The Under-23 take on Islanders at BFA Field on Saturday. Before that however the Hogges will be looking to win their first game of the season when they take on Islanders at the National Sports Centre tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
