Healy aims for spot in Windies HK squad

West Indies will hold a trials camp in March to select their squad to play in this year's IRB Sevens tournament in Hong Kong.

And among those in contention should be Renegades player Tom Healy who represented Windies in the Punta de Estes sevens tournament which took place in Uruguay over the weekend.

Head coach Joe Whipple will gather the players together in Trinidad and Tobago and make his selection from the squads who competed in Uruguay and in the Trinidad and Tobago Enthusiasts tournament in December.

Having won the Trinidad contest, Windies faced a much tougher test in Uruguay, coming up against the likes of Italy, Argentina, and Samoa.

In a group alongside club team Cardinals and a combined Argentine and Uruguay side, Wolves Moby Dick, the West Indies struggled, losing their opening two games of the tournament 33-17 to Cardinals and 26-5 to Wolves Moby Dick.

Leading 12-7 at half-time against Cardinals, the prospect of a first day win was on the cards. However, an inspired display by Cardinals' German Nunez in the second half turned the game for their opponents.

After defeat at the hands of the combined side, the Caribbean team entered the Shield tournament in which they shocked Uruguay's Eastern champions, Carrasco Polo, 21-15.

Hollis Green ran in two tries and Luther Burrell grabbed another to take them through to the semi-finals against Clover Paysandu.

Kevin McKenzie, who plays his rugby in Ireland for Bective Rangers, scored his side's only try as they slipped to a 19-7 loss.

The players will now return to their domestic leagues before the trials camp in March, and the Hong Kong Sevens tournament later that same month.

n The rugby season kicks off again in Bermuda this Saturday after a brief break with the Police Rugby Club annual Duckett Memorial game.

Several Bermuda select XVs will take on Police teams with games getting underway at 12.15 p.m. at Police Field.
