Hornets fight back to stun league leaders

Tale of two chances: Blazers striker Angelo Simmons (above) blasted this shot wide, while (below), Dandy Town's David Signor made no such mistake, scoring his side's first yesterday.

The other team to qualify for the festive period competition yesterday was PHC, on goal difference. Both Blazers and Cougars had already booked their places in the Dudley Eve.

A brace by striker Raymond Beach, a Carlos Smith penalty and a header from defender David Signor pulled Hornets back from the dead in yesterday's game after Angelo Simons had given Blazers a two-goal cushion early in the first half.

Signor's header midway through the first period kick-started Hornets' entertaining comeback, which saw Meshach Wade's men plunder three-goals after the break with Blazers unable to stop the rot.

Boulevard looked on track to continue their impressive unbeaten start to the season after Simmons tapped home early on, before capitilising on an error by Hornets goalkeeper Kejon Sampson to double the visitors' advantage.

After the break Meshach Wade's side exploited Blazers' shaky defence with the hosts having no answer to Damon Ming's devilish deliveries from either flank. Former Bermuda Hogges striker Beach twice bundled the ball home from set-pieces while veteran Smith made no mistake from the penalty spot after Antoine Russell had been hauled down inside the area.

Hornets assistant coach Scott Moreton praised the Hornets players for their goal-laden second half display and said they responded well to their half time team talk.

"I have to give all the credit to my players today. Our half time team talk was all about belief. We had to believe in our game plan and see it through. Blazers won the first half but we told the players that they had to go out and win the second half. And that's exactly what we did.

"We can now look forward to the Dudley Eve and overall we're quite pleased with the way the season is shaping up for us."

According to Blazers assistant Richard Todd, it was Blazers' inability to cope with Hornets' aerial bombardment that cost them.

He said: "We really should have killed the game off in the first half when we created a lot of chances. In the second half we struggled defensively and didn't deal with the balls they kept pumping in the box. We've lost our unbeaten record, but it's still been a great first half of the season and now it's all about how to respond from this defeat."
