Houston leaves UK for California
Bermuda sprinter Tre Houston has swapped the London drizzle for the Californian sunshine as he prepares for his first track meet under world renowned coach Tony Lester.
The 19-year-old left for the Golden State earlier this week where he will spend a month training at a warm weather camp alongside Lester's stable of top sprinters.
The nephew of Bermuda track legend Troy Douglas, Houston moved to the UK at the start of year in order to team up with sprint guru Lester, who has worked with star quality UK athletes such Denise Lewis, Marlon Devonish and Roger Black.
Houston received a $10,000 grant from Bermuda Olympic Association's (BOA) Delhi Commonwealth Solidarity Fund to cover his relocation costs as he prepares for the biggest year of his career.
Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, said she had received positive feedback on Houston's progress from Lester.
"Tre is doing great training with Tony," she said. "They are travelling to California this week for about a month of training in the warm weather.
"He will be competing in his first track meet since being with Tony in California. I communicate with Tre through Facebook just about everyday.
"He is enjoying it, working hard and looking forward to his first meet. I also spoke to Tony who told me Tre is fitting in very well and is a hard worker.
"I think they both can't wait for his first meet to see how he makes out."
Former sprinter Douglas introduced Lester to Watson at the World Championships in Berlin last summer where they discussed the possibility of the Great Britain relay coach and the young sprinter working together.
The pair then met up last November when Lester visited the Island to conduct a coaching workshop at the National Sports Centre.
