Houston to train with world-class coach in UK

Tony Lester

Bermuda's top sprinter Tre Houston could be about to move his career to Europe where he would train and compete under the guidance of world-renowned coach Tony Lester.

Lester has worked with star quality UK athletes such as Olympic champions Denise Lewis and Marlon Devonish as well as Olympic silver medallist Roger Black during his decorated career.

He will meet up with Houston and his father in Bermuda in November when Lester will also put the Island's best young runners through their paces as part of a three-day workshop.

Bermuda Track and Field (BTFA) president Donna Watson met Lester, a Great Britain 4X100 relay coach, at the World Championships in Berlin last month where she discussed the possibility of Lester and Houston teaming up.

"I was introduced to Tony through Troy Douglas (a former Bermuda athlete) when I was at the World Championships," said Watson. "Tony has coached several world class UK sprinters.

"Our initial discussion was based around how we could get our Bermuda athletes to be able to compete at the world level. This then led to discussions regarding our elite athletes.

"With Tony's main skill being coaching sprinters we began to discuss Tre Houston and the opportunity of him being able to train and compete in Europe with him.

"We stayed in contact after the worlds and I discussed this with Tre's father who seemed to be interested."

As well as helping Bermuda's young sprinters Lester, who also works with international rugby players like England's Ugo Monye, will share his vast knowledge with the BTFA coaches during his trip.

And Watson hopes to extend the arrangement so Lester will return to the Island regularly and also plans to send local coaches overseas to gain experience.

"I asked Tony since he would be in Bermuda would he extend his visit and put on a workshop. He agreed and we are now working towards making this a reality.

"The workshop will be geared towards the coaches and the sprinters specifically, but any athlete in any other discipline is welcome to attend. I'm very excited about this opportunity and my hope is that the track coaches and the athletes take this opportunity to learn all that they can from Tony.

"We would like to do things like this at the very least once a year because not only do we need to improve the skills and abilities of our athletes but we also need to upgrade the skills our local coaches.

"We will also be sending some of our coaches to courses overseas. When I first met with Tony I didn't think it would end up where we are now."
