Injured Govia ruled out of U-19 World Cup campaign

Bermuda's Under-19 World Cup qualifying ambitions have suffered a major setback with the loss of promising leg spinner Tre Govia through injury.

The Bailey's Bay cricketer injured his right rotator cuff while practising with his Under-19 team-mates earlier this year and has yet to toss down a delivery in a Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) sanctioned match this season.

Govia is presently undergoing physiotheraphy and is scheduled to have an MRI scan next month that will determine whether or not he will require surgery.

"Tre is very upset but his health is more important at the moment. And we are not going to rush anything because he still has a lot of years ahead of him to play cricket," commented Govia's mother, Linda.

The BCB have scheduled a press conference for next Tuesday when Bermuda's Under-19 World Cup qualifying squad will be announced.

Govia was among those who represented Bermuda at the previous Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. He also played for the Island at last year's Sir Garfield Sobers Tournament in Barbados before making his Cup Match debut for champions St.George's at the tender age of 15 to cap a memorable summer.

On a more positive note, star batsman Chris Douglas is expected to be named in the Island's Under-19 World Cup qualifying squad next week.

The St.David's cricketer fractured his left thumb in South Africa earlier this year during a practice match with the senior national squad ahead of 2011 World Cup qualifiers.

Douglas, who stroked a polished half-century against Chris Gayle's West Indies last summer in Toronto, recently played in a Commercial Divison match for the Islanders to suggest he is nearing full recovery.

Meanwhile, the 2009 Limited Overs campaign begins today with two-time defending Premier Division champions Young Men's Social Club opening the defence of their crown against Somerset at Devonshire Rec.

Social Club are still smarting from a ten-wicket drubbing at the hands of Southampton Rangers in last month's Belco Cup final and will be keen to shake off the effects of that humiliation and get their season back on track.

At Southampton Oval, division newcomers Bailey's Bay are facing a baptism of fire against hosts Southampton Rangers, Police could have their hands full at Police Field against promoted PHC while Cleveland host St.David's at Sea Breeze Oval.

Today's First Division Limited Overs schedule sees Somerset Bridge hosting Leg Trappers at White Hill Field, Western Stars taking on Warwick at St.John's Field and Willow Cuts and St.George's doing battle at Somerset Cricket Club.

Cricket action continues tomorrow with another full slate of Premier and First Division matches on tap.

In the day's top Premier encounter, Young Men's Social Club tackle St.David's at Devonshire Rec, PHC host Southampton Rangers in a West End derby at White Hill Field, Bailey's Bay take on Police at Sea Breeze Oval and Somerset host Cleveland at Somerset Cricket Club.

In First Division play, Leg Trappers are pitted against Warwick at Police Field, St.George's will clash with Willow Cuts for the second time in 24 hours at Wellington Oval while Flatts will lock horns with Western Stars at Lords.

All matches to begin at 11 a.m.
