Juniors make a splash

Multiple personal best times were set this weekend at the Winter Series Swim meet, with many junior athletes making a splash in their first ever competition at the BASA pool.

Swimmers from Sharks, Dolphins and Harbour swim clubs took to the water on a weekend of exciting action.

National Swimming Ben Smith was on hand for the event and was pleased with what he saw from the future of the sport on the Island.

"This meet was a good early season test for all the swimmers," said Smith.

"Many of the swimmers were able to produce personal best times and we saw some good improvement.

"The highlight of the meet was Somer Froud taking close to two minutes off the 11and 12 1500 metre freestyle records.

"She came within sixth tenths of a second of a double, a time for Carifta qualification."

Each club had standout performances with personal best times being shattered continuously throughout the day.

For Sharks, it was the likes of Hazel Roberts, Charlotte Fairies, Holly Bruton, Jessyka Haak and Ethan Daley who all achieved best times in their respective events.

Emma Harvey of Harbour secured an invite to join the national programme when she made 'A' standard for the 50-metre butterfly in the nine-year-old age group, while Dolphins also had a few exceptional races as well.

"All of the great swimming performances bode well for the upcoming –Winter Age Group Championships, which will be held over the first weekend in December,"said Richard Goodwin, Harbour's head coach.

Alice Branagan, who showed great poise as the only swimmer in the pool for the 200m fly, Liam Peniston, who snagged his best time with a solid performance in the 800m free, Madelyn Moore and Evan Farrow who both swam a tight race side-by-side in the 800m free, and Gabby Pucci and Megan Lau who swam an exhilarating 400m –Individual Medley and –finished only 0.26 seconds apart.

Dolphins also had a large number of swimmers –tackling new events and longer distances, with 56 of the 131 entries being first time swims. Counting those first time swims, 33 of the 46 athletes all had personal bests.

"BASA was also hosting a team from Saint Andrews College. Ontario, Canada, and we would like to acknowledge such a polite and friendly group of swimmers," said Smith.

"It was a pleasure to have them join us for the meet, and we look forward to welcoming them back next year."
