Kyme on course to face Foster

Dan Sullivan (left) takes on Aaron Smith in the squash national championships earlier this week at the BSRA Devonshire Courts.

Perennial favourites Patrick Foster and Nick Kyme remain on collision course to face each other in the final of the national squash championships.

Number one seed Foster and Nick Kyme, number two seed, continued their winning ways last night at BSRA squash courts in Devonshire.

Micah Franklin, number three seed, is on track to play Kyme in one semi-final, and number four seed Jon Boody, who defeated Murray Brewer 3-1 will face Foster.

Foster played Jan Brewer in last night's quarter-final after Brewer had an exceptionally tough match in the previous round and had narrowly defeated Peter Barrett 3-2.

The Ladies competition is also going according to the seedings with two of Bermuda's most experienced ladies, Liz Martin number one seed, and Denise Kyme, number two seed, on course to meet in the final if they win their matches against Suzy Stones and Kim Morbey tomorrow night.

In the Men's Veteran's, number one seed Norman Furtado won last night against Graham Pearce. Number two seed Richard Brewer coasted to a win against Ross Barkwell, number three seed Colin Alexander defeated Edwin Wickham, and former four seed Tony Prentice defeated Tony Sampson

Perhaps the match of the championships so far was a real nail biter in the first round of the Ladies Division between 12-year-old junior star, Emma Keane, and Kim Morbey. Competing with adults can be a daunting task for young juniors and so it appeared to be for Keane as she lost the first two games in her best of five match.

Fighting all the way the youngster lost those games 11-9, and 14-12, but gained in confidence as the match progressed, coming back strongly to win the next two games 11-9, 11-4.

The deciding game had spectators on their feet as first one then the other took the lead. It was Morbey who finally triumphed 11-8, but Keane clearly showed that she has both the talent and tenacity to be an excellent player.

Squash spokesman Roger Sherratt said, "It's very rewarding to see our juniors making an impact against adult competition at the national level.

"Micah Franklin at 16 is now a force to be reckoned with, and Emma Keane is rapidly developing her skills.

"She has the whole package. But we also have a host of other promising youngsters including Korin Knights who reached the last 16, Elijah Simmons, Jennifer Ince, Alex Marshall, D'Vario Thompson, Laird and Beckett Simmons, all of whom are still playing in the consolation rounds and gaining valuable experience.

Men's Veteran's will be playing their quarter-finals this evening. Action gets underway at the BSRA courts at 6 p.m.

Friday night is semi-finals night for all events and the finals get underway from 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Admission is free. Further information can be found on the BSRA website at www.bermudasquash.com .
