Lee is fitter, but I had more support

Blast from the past: A young Shaun Goater in his Manchester United days

I was pleased to meet up with a blast from my past last week when I returned to my old hunting ground Manchester to open up a new telephone store.

The owners required the services of two "legends" for the grand opening and ended up with 'the Goat' and my old friend Lee Sharpe.

Lee and me go right back to when I was an kid at United, when we used to share digs.

I remember when the club allowed us all to go home. As a Bermudian I was a bit stuck as my family were a plane journey away but Lee would always let me stay with his family in Birmingham and I got to know his parents pretty well.

He was a very talented player who probably didn't quite realise his full potential. But to be fair to him when he left United I think he found it difficult.

I mean where do you go from there? He was a fans' favourite at Old Trafford and I think he found it hard to walk away.

He's done okay for himself since though and he keeps himself busy with various promotional work and investments, and I hate to say it but he's in a lot better shape than me these days!

Although, I was pleased I probably signed more autographs than him while we were opening the store, even though it was pretty near Old Trafford. City didn't have a game that day while United were playing Bolton and there were plenty of fans from the blue half of Manchester mulling about which was good for me.

While I was in Manchester I also managed to take in City's game against Wigan in one of the VIP boxes where the likes of Italian legend, and current Republic of Ireland boss, Giovanni Trapattoni, former Everton defender Dave Watson and ex-Manchester United assistant Archie Knox were viewing the match.

Surrounded by legends, watching City and getting paid for some PR work – I couldn't ask for much more could I?

I must admit I haven't been following the Bermuda Football Association presidential election race that closely but I'm delighted Richard Calderon was voted in by the clubs.

However, I think Larry Mussenden has to be given credit for what he achieved during his time in office. He made the presentation to Government to get the $15 million funding and that can't be ignored.

But Richard is a football man and I think that counts for a lot. It gives me confidence to know when he makes a decision it will be from both a football and business standpoint.

Obviously Richard is someone who played football at a high level as a former national team player, has a strong background in the game, and he has the faith of the affiliates.

Often change is not always for the best but in this case I think it is. Although we've now got the money and the facilities are improving I think for some time we've lacked that little bit of leadership and I think Richard will provide that.

He seems like a man whose love and passion for football is still as strong as it ever was and that again makes me excited for our future.

All I would say is that he can't perform miracles overnight and the public will need to give him time.
