Local sailors shine overseas
Bermuda's sailors performed superbly yesterday in two international regattas – one in Miami and the other in the Cayman Islands.
Olympic veteran Peter Bromby is holding down 13th place at the Bacardi Cup Star Class Regatta on Biscayne Bay in Miami. Bromby is sailing with 2000 Star Olympic gold medallist Magnus Liljedahl from America and the two are the defending champions of this regatta which attracts some of the best Star sailors in the world.
Bromby finished the fourth race yesterday in seventh place to go along with his 52, 3, 2 finishes this week.
A team of some of the best young Bermuda sailors are currently in the Cayman Islands and they competed in the first two races of the North American and Caribbean regional Youth Olympics qualifying event in the Byte CII class yesterday.
A Bermuda sailor must finish the regatta in at least fourth place for the Island to win a spot at the Youth Olympics this August in Singapore and after yesterday's sailing Bermuda are holding down the third and fourth spots with Raheim Steede and Kalin Hillier respectively.
Head of the Bermuda Sailing Association, Somers Cooper, who is with the team in the Caymans said, yesterday: "We had a really good day. I have to give our guys credit - they sailed very well and in tough conditions.
"The wind was really blowing about 18 knots and although they (organisers) wanted to get in four races today they could only manage two."
Sitting on top after two races are the US Virgin Islands followed by Curacao in second and Bermuda holding down third and fourth.
Bermuda's other sailors are Dimitri Stevens in sixth place, Owen Siese in 10th spot, Alex Davies in 24th place, and McKenzie Cooper in 28th place.
Siese had some bad luck when he lost his shackle to his vang during a capsize but later managed to get it fixed.
There are 16 nations and 29 sailors competing in the regatta.
