Lowe falls short in St David's nail biter
St.David's 214 for eight; Somerset CC 200
St.David's won a nail biter at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday where they defeated the hosts by 14 runs in an evenly contested Premier Division match.
Batting first, St David's piled up a decent total thanks to a superb knock from opener McLaren Lowe who fell just one run shy of a century when he was run out for 99 in the 44th over.
Non-striker Lowe, who was run out the day before during his team's Eastern Counties win over Bailey's Bay, had called for a quick single but was sent back by cousin Arthur Pitcher Jr at the other end and was caught short of his crease by Wendell White.
Lowe, who was dropped three times, faced 141 balls in 193 minutes and slammed eight fours and four sixes. Along with OJ Pitcher Jr (32) he added 111 runs for the third wicket.
St.David's skipper Lionel Cann was the only other Islanders bat reaching double figures.
The returning White was Somerset's chief destroyer with the ball. The all-rounder returned superb figures of four for 32 off nine overs of seam while Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson had two for 36 off ten overs.
Somerset were penalised three overs for bowling a slow over rate and in the end it proved costly as the game went right down to the wire.
Skipper Robinson top scored with a swashbuckling 61 off 56 balls in 78 minutes. Robinson smashed eight fours and two sixes.
Off spinner Delyone Borden was the pick of the Islanders' bowling, claiming three for 31 off only ten overs, while Justin Pitcher took two for 34.
