Motorcycle racers out for fast start

Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club (BMRC) member Antoine Richards believes the 2010 season will exceed all expectations when the season begins tomorrow at the Bermuda Motorsports Park at Southside.

With many of last year's class champions not being determined until the final race day, this year's racing has a tough act to follow with new riders joining the fray.

Yet, Richards, who won't fully compete on the local circuit after recently signing a professional contract to race in the United States, is optimistic this year will be another one filled with excitement and drama, with a strong entry expected on the opening day.

One class to watch out for will be the 600cc in which defending champion Paul DeCouto will have his hands full in holding off those looking to snatch his crown.

"I'm not racing locally this year as I am riding the US, but the club is excited to be getting back out on the track and to get the race season underway." said Richards.

"The year should be exciting with a few riders changing classes and moving up in class as well as new riders coming in . . .

"In the 600cc class, there are new riders going into that and with that being our top class the racing should be tight.

"The track looks in good condition so we are pleased.

"When you look at that class you have Paul looking to defend his title while Shannon Caisey and Cyril Whitter have moved up along with David Jones and Stephen Paynter who are always competitive," added Richards.

"I may have a race or two if I can in but that's not any promise."

"We have a lot of riders besides the 600cc riders who are coming along good. Bruce DeGrilla jr, Cody Sousa-Saints and Keanu Wilson are just a few to look out for in the 125cc class, with Keanu maybe riding the 600 as well.

"The younger kids are also very competitive although their bikes don't go as fast."

Team Tuned Motorcycle Racing will also begin the defence of their two titles they won last year in the GP70 and GP125 classes.

DeGrilla and Cody Sousa-Saints will be looking to repeat as champions, while Shae Darrell and Whitter have been added to the team as all four look to make a splash.

Tomorrow's racing at Southside will begin at 2 p.m.
