Nelson bags second medal at Masters event

Master swimmer Colleen Nelson grabbed her second medal at the FINA World Championships in Valhalla, Sweden yesterday in the 50m breaststroke, to add to the gold medal she won in 100m breastroke in the 60-64 category.

Nelson's time of 43.66 seconds was good enough for the bronze medal, with Germans Brigitte Kuehl and Annerose Trobish, who finished just one hundredth of a second apart in 42.77 and 42.78 respectively, taking gold and silver. Bermuda's other competitors in the event, Karen Bruton and Kim Thomas, finished with times of 43.46 and 42.26 respectively.

"These days it is so important to give adults a venue for exercise, for health and social benefits and for those of us who wish to compete, the opportunity to travel to places like this," said Nelson.

"Nevertheless it's a huge thrill and I am very pleased with this second medal."

Annette Budge, Christiane Wehmeyer and Nelson all competed in the 200m Individual Medley. Budge and Wehmeyer competed in the women's 40-44 age group, with Budge finishing in 19th place with a time of 3.09.19 while Wehmeyer earned a medal for her tenth place finish in 2.55.35.

Nelson finished ninth in the women's 60-64 age group in 3.31.91.

In the 50m freestyle Paul Viney and Simon Horrell finished 18th and 23rd respectively in times of 30.06 and 30.57 out of sixty six competitors in the event who made the qualifying time.

Thomas also swam the 50m free in the women's 25-29 age group in a time of 31.60 finishing 47th out of 60 swimmers who made the qualifying times.

There were at least 20 others whose times did not rank.

Today will be the swimming relays at the Valhalla pool where Bermuda will have four teams, two mixed in the four by 50m medley and four by 50m freestyle, and also two women's relays, both freestyle and medley.
