Pair scoop medals in Caribbean

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson heaped praise on the Island's athletes who competed in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships in Havana, Cuba.

Bermuda's six senior athletes performed admirably, claiming two bronze medals.

"This was a very good competition for the Bermuda team," sad Watson. "With six athletes traveling we came out with two bronze medals.

"The competition at this meet was very tough and it felt like another Carifta only with the Cuban athletes winning everything and placing first and second in nearly every event."

Leading the way for the squad were Shianne Smith and Sean Trott, both of whom had a championship to remember.

Trott, who placed fifth in the Bermuda Day marathon this year, placed third in the half marathon, whilst Smith claimed the bronze in the women's heptathlon.

"Sean had a good half marathon placing third and Shianne had a great competition in the heptathlon placing third with this being her first International competition," said Watson.

"Fortunately this was one of Shianne's better events so we had no doubt that she would win the bronze. She placed second in the 800m well ahead of the athlete from Trinidad.

But there were some disappointments, Watson revealed: "Kavin (Smith) was having a very good race even though he had been having stomach trouble after we arrived in Cuba he was in medal contention up to the half way point of the Half Marathon and pulled a hamstring.

"Aaron Evans also had an unfortunate experience as during his warm up for the finals he pulled his hamstring also.

"He attempted to run in the finals but limped home for the last 100m.

"Tre was disappointed that he did not make the final in the 100m or 200m but was up against some tough competition.

"Lovintz Tota (Long Jump) had a good comeback and I can see him going very far in the sport if he sticks with it.

"All in all I am happy with the team's performance especially at this high level and they are a young team.

"Overall we have had a great track season and I can only see us building on this and going forward for next year."
