Parish determined to avoid the drop

Hamilton Parish goalkeeper Nigel Burgess insists that revenge won't be on the minds of his team-mates but rather getting three crucial points that could yet save their top-flight status which is in real danger when they play Somerset Eagles at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

The two sides squared off in the FA Cup semi-final last weekend, a match won by Eagles, and a repeat result would see Parish doomed to First Division football next season.

But Burgess reckons there could still be a twist in the tale, although his side need to take care of business first and foremost.

"Last week's game was hard fought and we will be expecting the same type of match," said Burgess. "We expect to give our all and we are sure they will although they don't have anything to play for and we are hoping to get the points and hopefully be in a position to keep ourselves alive going into the final match of the season.

"The FA loss is behind us, we are looking to survive in the league and that is the main point."

Parish have had a topsy turvy season, having been in and out of the relegation battle throughout the campaign.

With the loss to Devonshire Colts two weeks ago, a result that saw them go three points behind Colts, they put themselves in serious trouble go down with Somerset Trojans who are already doomed.

While the deck seems stacked against them, Burgess is confident that they can drag themselves out of trouble and preserve their status for one more year – not just for the players, but the community as well.

"We need at least four points to have a chance and it starts this weekend.

"Six points would be ok depending on other results but four may just get us there . . . but we need to focus on what we do first.

"We have left it a bit late but we still have a chance and we will fight until the end.

"We started the season off a bit slow but picked it up a bit towards the Christmas break where we got some good wins.

"We hurt ourselves in the games we did lose by the fact that we gave away silly goals through mental lapses and things like that, and as of late as well, including myself, and that has been our main downfall.

"We only have ourselves to blame for what we are in and can only look to do our job in getting out of it.

"Without errors we would have got a few more wins and draws that would have had us well clear.

"It is important that we stay up, not only for ourselves but also our community.

"We have the whole Hamilton Parish behind us as and we want to make them proud.

"In our community we only have Parish apart from Bailey's Bay Cricket Club, so it is a big following behind us and we want them to be happy with our performances."

Parish's trip down to the First Division could also be confirmed if Southampton Rangers and Devonshire Colts win their games tomorrow.

Both are three points clear of Parish and have a better goal difference and a win will keep both away from the drop zone.

Rangers entertain league leaders North Village at Southampton Oval while Colts host Dandy Town, who are chasing down Village, at Police Field.

In the day's two other matches, Devonshire Cougars host Somerset Trojans at Devonshire Rec., while Boulevard welcome PHC to BAA Field.
