Perozzi prepares for comeback

Bermuda boxer Teresa Perozzi will return to the ring for the first time in more than two years with a showdown against Florida fighter Cimberley Harris at Berkeley Institute Gymnasium later this month.

Perozzi, 36, has not swung a punch in anger since losing the fight of her life against Russian steamroller Natascha Ragosina in a seven-belt battle in Magdeburg, Germany in 2008.

Her top billing bout with Harris – a rough and tumble brawler – will also be Perozzi's first fight on the Island for three years and she admits there have been a few early signs of ring-rust in training.

"I must be looking forward to it because I agreed to it," said the NABC Middleweight World Champion. "It's been a while so I'm more nervous than I am usually this far ahead of a fight.

"My last few fights have been pretty big deals so I've spent the money on bringing a trainer here, or to go away to a camp but I've not been able to do that this time.

"I don't want to say I'm not getting good training but it's not at the same intensity that I'm used to."

A fit and properly prepared Perozzi should have far too much punching power for the experienced Harris who she will meet in a six-round bout on Saturday, July 24.

Perozzi had been scheduled to fight Harris on the Island back in 2007 but the lowly ranked slugger mysteriously pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

"She's had more fights than me as an amateur and professional," said Perozzi.

"She's not highly ranked, she's a brawler, really tough and keeps coming forward.

"I think it's a fight the fans will like but as long as I'm in good shape and prepared to throw enough punches I should be okay."

Perozzi's two-year hiatus from boxing has allowed her to concentrate on her job as a masseuse and spend more time with her 13-year-old son Micah Perozzi, a promising footballer and cricketer.

But Reuben Bean, who is promoting this month's 'Smashdown' event – a night of professional female boxing and full-contact mixed martial arts – hopes to fix-up more fights for Perozzi in the future.

"I know Reuben wants to make this a regular thing for me over the next few years and promote me," Perozzi said.

"I guess I'll have to see how this one goes and see how I feel.

"Pretty much the only reason I agreed to it was because of it being held in summer.

"I have a full-time job and a 13-year-old son and during the school term I just can't commit to training twice a-day.

Promoter and president of Jiketsu Martial Productions, Bean, said he was anticipating another exciting night of high-octane professional boxing and mixed martial arts action.

Jiketsu Martial Productions also hosted past international quality events Sanshou Showdown in 2007, Fist of Fury in '08 and Budo Cup in '09.

"We're thrilled to once again bring Bermuda a night of hard-hitting, professional female boxing and full-contact, mixed martial arts action," said Bean.
