PHC are hitting their stride at right time

Kevin Richards

Defending FA Cup champions PHC will renew an old and historic rivalry in the third round of this years competition when they face Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

The two clubs between them own an incredible 19 FA Cup titles with PHC beating both Trojans and North Village to becoming the first side to lift the coveted showpiece 10 times with their victory last year over Dandy Town 2-0.

With the Warwick side living up to their potential in the two games they have played in 2009 after a disappointing start to the season, PHC defender Kevin Richards is confident his side is finally ready to come good.

Having knocked out Devonshire Cougars in the Friendship trophy and with a string of good league results to their name, PHC are ready to get themselves back in contention for all remaining titles available, including a successful defence of their FA crown.

Richards, who has been involved in many classic battles between the two sides is wary of the threat Somerset poses, but won't be drawn into the upset talk surrounding the match, noting that his side must first worry about themselves and than everything else.

"Somerset have been getting some good results lately, making it to the finals of the First Division's Dudley Eve and we know that this West End derby is always a fierce contest," he said.

"With no disrespect to Somerset, I think this game will be about PHC. Player for player we have the more talented squad, and I feel that the determining factor will be whether we come out to play or not.

"At this point we are looking to continue to get good results in 2009, and the way we start the game will decide what happens this weekend. Too many times this season we have been playing catch-up to teams."

Cup ties always seem to bring out the best in Zebras, who last year were head and shoulders above the rest of the league.

More emphasis will be put on this match more than any other now, with the champions having already relinquished their Martonmere Cup and having already had a dreadful Dudley Eve tournament.

A loss won't be detrimental to their season, but with their league title slipping through their fingers, being six points back and time running out, now is as good a time as any to get some confidence heading into the business end of the season.

"No matter what competition we are in we must go into games looking for a victory.

"I think a run of form is necessary for us, as we have been up and down thus far.

"Being that we are playing against Somerset, this will be a big game for our club and our fans. We have put the Martonmere and Dudley Eve disappointments behind us and will be looking for success in all of the remaining competitions."
