Phillips' basketballcareer left in limbo
Bermuda basketball star Sullivan Phillips' career has been left in limbo.
The Island's only professional basketball player is without a club having left Cyprus National Basketball League side, Pizza Express Primetel Apollon.
Although Phillips is in talks with several teams in Europe, he insists he won't join a club unless he feels it is the right move for his career.
"Next season is up in the air but I'm in talks with several European competition teams and that's the angle to which I'm looking to be in," he said.
"Wherever it may be I'm just looking to win, that's the only thing that matters at this point in my career.
"Last year I was between Cyprus and Greece and the experience was good, we won up until the semi-finals which is close but you play to win so unfortunately we didn't come up trumps. But you learn when you lose, so it was a learning experience."
While Phillips enjoyed the experience of playing for Apollon, a lack of game time in his prefered position forced him into seeking opportunities elsewhere.
An attack-minded player, Phillips was used in a defensive role in Cyprus, something he was not prepared to put up with for more than one season.
"It's been good to broaden my experience but the adjustment was not what I was looking for at this juncture in my career at my age," he said.
"If I am not playing for some very big team in this role it is definitely not what I am looking for, but we will see what happens.
"My next move has to be somewhere I have a primary role. I prefer the pressure of having to do rather than sit back and wait, then do."
While Phillips is happy to wait for his next opportunity, he said he thought it wouldn't be long before another Bermudian joined him in the professional ranks.
The lone professional on the gold medal-winning Island Games basketball team, Phillips heaped praise on his team-mates.
"With the Island games the difference I think was our grit and determination at the end of the day," said Phillips.
"Unbeknown to a lot of the public, Bermuda is one of the only medal contending countries were the majority of the players aren't professionals at any level, but their still in the Bermuda squad for their love of the game.
"So it's a tough ask to win these games but our desire and trust within our unit pulled us through."
He sees potential in a lot of players on the Island, as long as they are committed to the game and to themselves.
"There is some potential in Bermuda but how its matured, and developed ultimately determines weather the quality of player can be taken to the next level... But there's definitely potential."
