Police lift season's opening tourney

Police reigned supreme at the weekend by winning the annual Sandys Boat Club rugby tournament at Malabar.

Renegades' ladies team were also crowned champions of their competition.

Teachers kicked off the tournament with a 10-0 defeat of rivals Renegades.

West Indies international Tom Healy went over for a try while Ian Henderson added to the score with a conversion and a penalty kick.

In the second game, defending Nicol Shield winners Mariners took on last season's runners-up in the league, Police, who won 12-3.

Dan Cole and Durnferd Davis crossed the line for Police with Tommy Edwards converting one of the scores.

Teachers won their second match of the day Mariners in what will be a prelude to the Presidents Cup match to be played on September 25.

Police then played to a 0-0 with Renegades before they beat Teachers 22-5.

Ross Fitz, David Pringle and Tommy Edwards all scored tries for Police with the latter adding a conversion.

That result meant that Renegades would have to beat Mariners by 17 points to ensure they regained the trophy they won last season.

But that was to prove a step too far Renegades, who could only manage a 3-3 draw. Neil McGuiness and Andy Boyce scored penalty kicks for each team respectively.

In the women's division, Renegades beat Police, Teachers and Mariners to win the cup.

The next round of games will be on September 25 with Renegades taking on Police and Teachers playing Mariners in the Preisdents Cup.

The ladies' touch games kick off at 1.00 p.m., mirroring the men's fixtures.
