Powerboaters try again
After a series of postponements the Round the Island Powerboat race is scheduled for tomorrow, starting and finishing at Ferry Reach.
Bad weather and rough seas prevented the boats from racing throughout last month but organisers are hoping for calmer conditions tomorrow.
With last year's champions Mark and David Selley unable to defend their crown because of school commitments, the father-and-son team of Stephen and Brendon DeSilva are favoured to take overall honours.
But a host of rookies will be chasing the title which the Selley twins claimed last year by holding off a late surge from ex-champion Andy Stoneham in their 'B Class phantom.
Among those scheduled to make their race debuts are father-and-son Gregg Simons and Greg Focke in the smaller 'A' Class and Tonka Simpson in the FB Class with co-driver Teko Bean.
First boats will leave the start line at 1.55 p.m.
The course of the race will encompass Ferry Reach, North Shore, Two Rock Passage, Hamilton Harbour, Granaway Deep, Port Royal Bay, Great Sound, Commissioner's Point, Fort St. Catherine's Point and St. David's and boaters have been advised to avoid these areas. Marine Police and race marshalls will be on patrol.
