Squash professional Patrick Foster wants to start a club league in Bermuda.

The Bermuda Squash Raquets Association pro believes it is necessary to have a competitive league on the Island if the sport is to continue its development.

Foster has been instrumental in the improvement of squash in Bermuda in recent years, helping to further develop a junior programme that has produced the likes of Micah Franklin who was recently crowned Junior Caribbean Squash champion.

And while bringing in the likes of former world number one John White for exhibition games and coaching clinics is all very well, Foster believes that continual competition is essential if the Island is to put on a good showing over the next few years in the build-up to the Island Games in 2013.

"Not everything has to be professionals coming in," said Foster.

"Active leagues are the norm in the rest of the world and it is time we had one in Bermuda."

While the BSRA facilities have four courts, there are also courts at the new Court House development, at Appleby, Ace, Coral Beach and in Malabar.

And Foster believes that if teams from all five entered then Bermuda could have a strong league which would give players on the Island something to test them on a regular basis.

"I'm hoping to get something up and running by Christmas," he said.

"We (BSRA) have already had some matches against Court House, and the members from both clubs really enjoyed the competition.

"We've already spoken to Coral Beach and hope they want to get involved, and it doesn't have to just be those five, if any company wanted to put in a team they could play because we have enough courts to cater for it."

Before the league gets underway, however, there is the small matter of the Club Championship which takes place from December 6-11 and has been running since the 1960s.

Defending champion Nick Kyme will once again be the favourite to win, although Franklin is expected to push him all the way and could certainly win the tournament.

And in November the AF Smith Corporate Team Championships will once again be played at BSRA. The annual event is a three-person handicap competition for all standards of players and will run from the 16-21.
