Promising Pimental crowned champion

Promising sailor Cameron Pimental helped put Bermuda on the world map when he was crowned overall junior champion at last weekend's Laser Radial Open Canadian Championships held at the St.Margaret Sailing Club in Nova Scotia.

The Bermudian placed third among a large fleet of sailors heralding from North America who competed in the three-day regatta.

Compatriot Ryan Sariava, who finished an equally impressive fourth to secure the Islanders an overall top five finish, closely followed him.

"It was an excellent result considering the fact that the event was an open one and not just youth," said coach Dino Weber.

Pimental, 17, sailed consistently throughout the regatta and placed as high as second in the fourth race while Sariava's highest finish arrived in the eighth race in which he placed third in the nine race, one drop series.

"Wind conditions were excellent with moderate winds blowing each afternoon once the fog cleared," Dino explained.

The teenaged sailor, who hopes to one day represent Bermuda at the Olympic Games, has produced some very impressive performances abroad this year, placing 18th at the South American Laser Championships in Argentina last January and ninth at the US Mid Winters West Championships in California in March.

Pimental and Sariava hardly had time to celebrate last weekend's success as they were due to arrive in France yesterday where they will compete in the Laser Radial European Championships, along with fellow countrymen Campbell Duffy, Jordan Saints, Jason Saints and William Hutchings.

Hutchings recently represented Bermuda in the Lasers at the 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing World Championships in Arhus, Denmark.

Bermuda are also currently represented at the International Optimist Dinghy Association World Championships in Cesme, Turkey by a team of Connor Astwood, Owen Siese, Brian Bulhoes, Kalin Hillier, Chris Sposato and David Hillier who placed fourth overall in the team racing event last weekend.
