Rams gunning for 9th title

Eight-time Friendship Trophy champions North Village will look to add a ninth and their first since 2007/08 when they take on last year's beaten finalists Southampton Rangers tomorrow at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

For the Rams, it will be a return to a pitch that in recent years has become a home for the side, winning the FA and Friendship Cups at the venue, including both titles in their 'Triple Crown' run in the 2007/08 season.

The side could not have drawn up a better script than to play the team that ultimately put paid to their league title ambitions two weeks' ago when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

Village are making their second appearance in a cup final at the National Sports Centre this season, having lifted the Dudley Eve Trophy last November after seeing off PHC Zebras in a low-scoring match that ended with a penalty shoot-out.

With another title on the line and revenge on the cards, veteran defender Kofi Dill stated that a win would go a long way to exorcise the demons that are Rangers.

"We're looking to win, it's the last cup competition we're in so we're looking to lift it," said Dill.

"We've already won the Dudley Eve but that alone is not enough.

"We were in contention for all of the trophies this season so we need to at least win two of them."

A welcoming sight to the Rangers dug-out will be Keith Jennings, who has been out since late February after a collision in a Premier Division match against Somerset Eagles.

The inspirational midfielder, whose injury earlier this season might have ended his playing career, will rejoin coach Gerri Saltus on the bench.

Saltus, who is in his first official final as a coach, believes his side are in a good frame of mind for the final and is hoping to get his first cup triumph under his belt and rebuild for next year.

"We have prepared very well this week," said Saltus. "All the players are very focused.

"Keith and I have working hard with the guys and if we stick to our game plan than we will be successful.

"We are looking for a huge effort from all the players.

"Winning the Friendship would do a lot for our community and Rangers.

"This would really shine that positive light on our programme."

The Friendship final kicks off at 3 p.m., with the Shield final between St. George's and Prospect starting at 12.30 p.m.
