Rangers finally get winning formula
Southampton Rangers preseason ambitions of finishing in the top four has finally gained some momentum, and the side can take another valuable stride in making the wish a reality when they travel to Police Field to clash with Devonshire Colts on Sunday.
Coming off the back of two strong performances – wins against tenants PHC and former league leaders Boulevard – the side will be looking to put their names in the hat as legitimate contenders when they face off against Colts.
A win over their hosts, who are in a relegation battle themselves, would see them leapfrog teams above them with all the big clubs playing each other and can have the side as high as fourth place come weekend's end.
Interim coach Gerri Saltus is optimistic about his side's chance of moving closer to the top of the charts, although they know that they can't underestimate their opponents.
"Going into the Colts match we know that it will be a hard-fought game," said Saltus.
"Colts will be fighting for their survival which makes them very dangerous, but we have prepared well this week so we look forward to getting maximum points and closing in on the leaders.
"Our good form of late is simple, we are playing as a team and fighting for each other.
"This has allowed us to play with confidence.
"Our focus remains on finishing in the top four."
Saltus revealed a very simple answer to why the squad have finally sprung to life after drubbings at the hands of Dandy Town and North Village just before the Christmas break which had them lying awfully close to the relegation battle.
And although their fortunes have gone up and down throughout the season, the main objective is still the same – take one game at a time and finish in the top four, two things the side are doing at the moment.
"We just concentrate on each game.
"The players are maintaining the information that is given and we continue to stay disciplined at the back."
"We try to build on the previous week's performance and get stronger.
"If we continue to do the right things and stay consistent then our chance to challenge for the title are as good as any team.
In the match of the day, champions Devonshire Cougars will have their backs against the wall when they visit high-flying leaders Dandy Town knowing that a loss will all but surely put paid to their repeat chances.
The side have come upon hard times in recent weeks, having not won since the turn of the year and need to get themselves back into the thick of the title race with a win.
And with that win, the side could go one point back, but a loss will see the lead increase to seven points and looking at the Hornets current form, they will be hard pressed to catch them.
Elsewhere around the Premier Division, PHC travel to Somerset Cricket Club to take on Somerset Trojans looking to keep pace with Dandy Town.
Having swept aside Hamilton Parish last weekend to bounce back from their derby loss to Rangers, the 2007/08 champions will be looking to add more misery to Colts in their pursuit of staying clear of the relegation zone.
Boulevard and Somerset Eagles will be looking to get their season back on track after both suffered losses last time out to put themselves further back in the chasing pack.
For Eagles it was a chance lost to get close to Town, who they went down 4-2 to at St. John's Field.
The remaining game will see second-placed North Village host Hamilton Parish as they look to take advantage of any slip up by Dandy Town, being only two points back.
All matches kick off at 3 p.m.
