Rangers out to silence critics

Moments before taking to the pitch for their Premier Division match against high-flying Dandy Town, Southampton Rangers players and team officials engaged in a rather bizarre dressing room ritual – torching a pre-match Royal Gazette article which had written them off against Hornets.

Evidently, the ploy got the desired effect as Rangers twice came from behind to win 3-2 over Hornets at Southampton Oval last weekend to give coach Albie Smith his first win at the helm at the sixth-attempt.

"We are just trying to silence the critics because everybody is doubting our ability, which is something that has actually worked in our favour," he explained. "It's nothing better than coming out on top and proving the critics wrong.

"We were really up for the match because it was a must win situation for us."

"It was very pleasing to get that first win; everybody was happy.

"But we must keep our heads above water because that was just one win.

"We cannot get carried away with one win and hopefully we can go on from here and win some more games."

Rangers prevailed with goals from Herbie Dillas (two) – making his first appearance of the season – and Anthony Rocker. Raymond Beach accounted for both Town goals.

Smith heaped praise on his players whose hard work now seems to be paying off.

"It was an A-plus performance because we trailed twice and to come back and win the game showed true character by the players.

"It was a team effort; everybody stood up and the introduction of Herbie (Dillas) paid dividends," he added.

Rangers' inspiring win over Hornets lifted them into fifth- place in the Premier Division where they have been consistent this season, losing only once to tenants PHC last October at the Oval.

Smith now hopes his players can capitalise on the momentum gained from their recent conquest of a Hornets side coach by former Rangers stalwart Meshach Wade.

"So far things have been pretty good for us," he said. "The players are working hard and I think it is now beginning to show. ."

Rangers take on Hamilton Parish at the Oval on Sunday knowing a victory will enhance their chances of qualifying for the Dudley Eve Cup competition, which kicks off December 18.

"Qualifying for the Dudley Eve is there for the taking but is not one of our main priorities at the moment – although it would be nice to play over the Christmas holiday," said Smith, whose younger sibling Keemo has bolstered his team's midfield following a move from First Division Wolves.

"But if even if we fail to qualify for the Dudley Eve we will continue to train hard over the Christmas break and work towards our goal."
