Record-breaker Trott a future May 24 champ?

One to watch: Nineteen-year-old Sean Trott sounded a warning to future Marathon Derby rivals when he clocked an impressive 1:16:47 to finish fifth overall and first in the junior division in Monday's 100th anniversary race.

Looking for a future May 24 Marathon Derby champion? Then look no further than fast-improving teenager Sean Trott.

The 19-year-old placed fifth overall in Monday's centennial race, setting a new record in the junior male division.

His time of one hour,16 minutes and 47 seconds, left him just 29 seconds behind nine-time winner Kavin Smith, who lifted the Masters division in 1:16:18.

And Trott's impressive run saw him slash more than three minutes off the time he recorded a year earlier.

His performance, however, was just one of three course records set.

Another outstanding run came from 1995 female champion Maria Conroy Haydon who clocked 1:42:54.

Now aged 50, Conroy Haydon set a new mark in the Seniors (50-59) category, finishing over nine minutes ahead of runner-up in that age group, Jane Christie, who came out of race retirement to celebrate the 100th anniversary.

Christie won the female title in 1983 and 1998.

Teenager Emily Dunne set a record of 1:57:01 in the female 16-19 division, although only three competitors took part and a year ago the category failed to attract any entrants.

Prizewinners and all runners are invited to attend this Friday's prize-giving ceremony at the Leopards Club from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
