Records fall for champ Aitken
Female athlete of the year Kiera Aitken won seven events at Rego Sotheby's National Swimming Championships at BASA Pool.
Aitken set a pair of open and four all comers records as she claimed the female champion of the meet award.
Fellow Olympian Roy Allan Burch set two new open male records and was the first Bermudian to ever go under the 23 second mark in the 50 metre freestyle.
Also breaking records were Stephanie Miles, who set a new 17-18 age group record and was third overall in the female category.
Burch, Aitken, Julian Fletcher, Nick Thompson and Rebecca Sharpe will join up again later this summer for the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome late next month.
And a team of 22 swimmers departed for a meet in Florida, the Coral Spring Invitational, shortly after last weekend's meet including Aitken and Burch. The Invitational meet will combine a developmental team with an elite worlds team.
Members of Bermuda's Island Games squad were also in form during the Rego Sotheby's National Swimming Championships including Rebecca Heyliger who won the girls 50m freestyle.
Harbour Swim Club and national team coach, Richard Goodwin, is excited about his young swimmers chances of medalling in Aland next week and believes they will gain first-hand experience of the international level.
"The Island Games team has one veteran in Nicole Yearwood, and her sister, Ashley, Rebecca Heyliger, Morgan Hopkins and Nathan Frick are the first-timers," said Goodwin.
"BASA views the Island Games as an important developmental meet and all of the swimmers are looking forward eagerly to the four day competition, which begins on next Monday and concludes on Thursday July 2.
"Coming off strong performances at Carifta and the recently concluded Makin' Waves Summer Age Group Championships and Rego Sotheby's, I'm confident that this team will acquit itself well."
So far 2009 has shaped up to be a succesful one for Bermuda's young swimmers. Earlier in the year golden girl Rebecca Sharpe signed off with a hat-trick of golds as the Island grabbed their biggest medal haul at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Aruba.
In a memorable championships for the Island's swimmers, Morgan Hopkins bagged a further two gold medals, as well as a silver and bronze, as they took away an impressive 12 medals.
The Bermuda team also set three Carifta records, two Bermuda Open records and 23 Bermuda age group records.
