Roberts hits target in shooting event

Ross Roberts yesterday won the Island's second medal in the 50 metre shooting event at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico.

Roberts recorded a personal best score of 592 to reach the eight men final and was in second place before dropping a few points to take the bronze medal.

A Commonwealth Games veteran, Roberts said winning a medal had been beyond his own expectations.

"I didn't have any expectations at all, I left Bermuda as a stage three athlete and no one expected the shooters to do anything," he said.

"We always go into a competition anticipating the best result and this time we managed to get it."

Roberts' team-mate Carl Reid also took part in yesterday's shooting final.

Swimmer Kiera Aitken made it to the final of the 50 metre backstroke, finishing in fifth position, while Lisa Blackburn was scheduled to compete in the 100m breastroke last night.

Prior to this summer's games, Bermuda had only won 14 CAC medals – one gold, three silver and 10 bronze.

Bermuda are being represented by their largest ever team at the CAC Games.

The Island has sent 60 athletes to compete in athletics, boxing, bowling, gymnastics, swimming, hockey, shooting, sailing, tennis and triathlon.
