Rugby trio to train with Welsh club
Three of Bermuda's most promising youngsters will travel to Wales next month to further their rugby education.
The trio, Shauntino Simons, Andre Landy and Aldo Campbell, will spend three weeks with Whitland RFC, who play in the Welsh First Division and are a feeder club for professional side Llanelli Scarlets.
And, as part of an exchange agreement with Bermuda Rugby Football Union, Whitland's coaches will come to Bermuda later this year, a move the BRFU hope will help improve the standard of rugby across all age levels on the Island.
The exchange was the brainchild of ex-Bermuda and Teachers player Brian Toms, who came up with the idea with Derek Hurdle during last month's Hurdle Memorial game.
BRFU have financed the trip, along with help from Teachers RFC and Onions RFC, and are banking on the three players, who all play for Bermuda Under-19s, putting their new training to good use when Bermuda travel to the Bahamas for the Carribean Championships in August.
"We picked these three because they play first XV rugby locally, which means they aren't being challenged at the youth level, and I think this will force them to adapt, and learn more," said Teachers coach Herbie Adderley. "Over there, they will be forced to play rugby, as opposed (to here) where they can use their speed and just run around everyone.
"The other thing is that this hopefully inspires the boys coming behind them, shows them that there are these opportunities out there, and we already have players saying they want to go next year."
n Bermuda will send a host of teams to Cayman next month to play in the Conyers Dill & Pearman Cup, including a first run-out for the new Under-16s side.
A full men's team will travel to the Islands for the April 29-May 3 tournament, and will be accompanied by the Under-10s, Under-12s, Under-14s and Under-16s.
It will be the first time that Bermuda have fielded an Under-16 side, something made possible by the work of coaches Ian Henderson, Des Nash, Conor McGlynn and John White.
Teams for the trip are due to be selected later this week.
