Sailor Stan sitting pretty
Sam Stan sits in fifth place after three races in the IODA North American Championships currently being held in Kingston, Ontario.
Stan, along with Ferdinand Arnold, Antonio Bailey, Michael Barit, Rory Caslin, Hannah Horsfield, Makai Joel, Sam Stan, Ceci Wollmann, Ellie Wollmann and Mikey Wollmann, are battling the best sailors in the region over the next few days for age group bragging rights.
200 youth sailors aged 10-15 from 21 countries are participating in the championships.
The event brings together National Champions and top sailors from North, Central and South America, the Caribbean, as well as Japan and New Zealand.
Stan placed second in the first race, fourth in the second and rounded off the day with a tenth place finish, to end with 16 points, seven behind Christopher Williford who has nine points.
Barit (95th), Joell (97th), Arnold (157th), Bailey (114th), Caslin (127th), Horsfield (169th), Mikey Wollman (194th), Ceci Wollman (113th) and Eddie Wollman (125th) all put in solid performances to end the day in the middle of the pack.
President of the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association, Paul Wollman, is pleased with the first race day.
"We got in three races yesterday, with a nice breeze and generally good sailing weather," said Wollman.
"There are some very good sailors here so it is not easy out there for anybody.
"The only issue we have had is with Ferdinand's tracking device, for some reason in the second and third races he was recorded as racing, although he did.
"The team continues to function well, they do tend to stick together like a team, are in good spirits and remain in one piece."
